20-minute Yoga Practice, Is It Worth It?

Jan 18, 2021

In short, yes, any time on the mat will be worth it.

You are probably used to seeing 1 hour or 90 minute yoga classes available online or at your studio, and it is true that the longer you practice per day, the deeper you will move into your yogic experience. But at Yoga Field & Sea, we totally understand that modern life gets in the way and not everyone can find 2 hours to sit on the mat every single day. With the added pressure of COVID-19 restrictions, life can easily feel even busier and more overwhelming than usual. Trying to fit in ANY yoga practice per day is difficult, let alone a full-blown hour long class both morning and night.

Perhaps you have young kids, a busy job, or simply a body that values short practices and lots of rest? If this is the case, you will enjoy our six new, free, 20-minute yoga videos coming soon for practicing at home. But is 20 minutes of yoga time per day enough to reap any benefits? According to scientists 15-20 minutes of mindfulness and exercise in the form of yoga can promote vast transformations in your life.

Some of these benefits include:

  • Stress release
  • Improved flexibility
  • Clearer thinking

In the West, we often forget the real meaning of yoga. Yoga is not about who can practice the longest and the hardest, or toning your legs, bums and tums. Yoga literally means ‘union’; Sadhguru refers to it as ‘that which brings you into reality’. Therefore, committing to your practice for even a short amount of time per day means you are still giving yourself the space to find your centre and some peace in an often-chaotic world.

Whether it is 20 minutes or 90 minutes, committing to your practice whenever you can, is the most important thing. With our short but effective classe coming soon, you will be able to squeeze in your yoga whilst the kids are playing, or the dinner is cooking. They will ensure you are able to have a little bit of the ‘down time’ you deserve, and they offer you the opportunity to recuperate from the stresses of ordinary life. These shorter practices are also perfect for people who have injuries or illnesses that require you to be a little gentler on your body.

Giving yourself time to practice each day will allow you to be more present and energised when you are off the mat. By setting the right intentions (learn more about setting intentions here), your 20-minute practice will be effective in tuning into your body and heart, whilst letting go of the day behind you. For many, the pressure of having to practice for hours a day is totally overwhelming and can cause many people to totally reject their yoga all together. If you are new to yoga, starting with a small commitment of just 20 minutes a day may ease you nicely into the yoga world.

So, I invite you to sign up here for our newsletter so you can receive our short, free and versatile videos to follow during your busier times. Roll out the mat and let the benefits of short 20 minute yoga practises flow into your life.
